We had a great afternoon of Canadian themed challenges and team relay races to celebrate the end of our Island Survival unit and the end of a great school year. We wish everyone a fun and safe summer!
Students had to collaboratively design how they would build the tallest tree possible using plastic cups. They had to agree on the same design before they could begin. They worked together to build and measure each tree they built and had very interesting conversations about how they could improve it each time. It was a good exercise not only for engineering and math, but in working together cooperatively as a group!
Today we started with writing a summary of a paragraph. It was about a boy who was going to go to the beach but when they got there, his swim suit was missing so his mom went to the van and it was there. We had a mystery reader. It was Rayan's mom again. She read us a book called David's Father. At the end she gave us original Pringles. After we started doing triple scoop words. You write a word that is bigger or different than another word. They make our writing more interesting. After we had music. In music we learned about how we get on the stage and the best piano people in the world. When I came back from music, it was snack time. I played with the plastic toys and set up the fruit. We had to go to math after recess. In math we learned about how to make numbers with numerals and words. After math we had journals. I wrote about when I went to Dominik's house on the weekend. We were supposed to use at least two or three triple scoop words in our writing. We had to underline the triple scoop words. After we had lunch. For lunch I went to the library to play games. I played with Dominik, Graeme, Adi and Timmy at the library. We played Janga. After I had quiet reading. I read a book called 101 Dalmations. After quiet reading we had science. We had a test on food chains. After science we had a finish work time. I worked on my empathy paper. I just had to colour it and make the border. I really like grade 3. My favourite subjects are gym, art and science.
We did zoning in this morning. We each got dictionairies and we got to decorate them. We will use them for spelling words when we are writing. We learned about organizing our ideas in writing. Mrs. Clayton drew a picture of a dresser. Then we were organizing the ideas into the drawers. Ideas should stay in their own drawers or readers get confused. Just like how we don't put our underwear and pants in the same drawer. Imagine you had no drawers and you had to use boxes. Our clothes would not be organized. We need drawers to organize our clothes. We organize our ideas by putting them in drawers. We should not mix up our ideas and put them in different drawers. Then we talked about Hey, Little Ant and we had a debate. Only three people thought that the boy should step on the ant. They thought about their own opinion and didn't go with their friends. I was about to go but I was too late.
In math we are learning about place value. In guided reading we read The Garden. Mrs. Clayton printed out paper for us about the garden. We had to underline the questions we made. After that we went to gym. After gym we had lunch. Then we did science. We are learning about food webs. A food web is when food chains connect. Imagine there is a fox then a rabbit which eats a plant. The arrows show which direction the energy goes. We are going to talk about empathy in health and career. I love grade three! We are learning a lot this year from Mrs. Clayton and Mrs. Finley. Mr. Mac teaches us math. Today we went to the Surrey Nature Centre. We learned more about food chains and ecosystems. We played a game about food chains. We were either squirrels, raccoons or a coyote. I was a coyote. I could eat the raccoons and the squirrels and I had to look for water and shelter. Raccoons could only eat squirrels. Squirrels could look for food and shelter. Every time somebody tagged you, you would have to give them a life card. I collected a lot of life cards. Christina collected more than anybody. She was a raccoon. Squirrels could not collect life cards because they can't eat meat. They are herbivores. In the second game Mrs. Clayton was a human who could take a card from you or give you a card. Simran's dad was fire so he could point at you and you would have to give him a card. Fire can kill animals. It was a fun field trip.
Today we were doing summaries. A summary tells someone about a story. You can make a summary using Somebody Wanted But So Then. In writing, we learned about how to make writing more interesting by adding voice. We add more details, thoughts, connections and feelings. We got a paragraph about a chameleon and we wrote our thoughts, connections and feelings to make it more interesting. We had a math test. It was about patterns. We had language arts. We read Those Shoes. We were vocabulary detectives to listen for new words. We had PE and we had stations and played Hot Potato. This afternoon we talked about fixed mindset and growth mindset. We had a piece of paper with sentences. Some showed a fixed mindset and some showed a growth mindset. We need to organize the sentences. In science we learned about food chains and food webs. A food web is when an animal eats lots of different things that are part of different food chains.
Today was a fun day at school!
We watched 'A Pittance of Time' this morning. It is about remembering people from the war. There was a man and he was not bowing his head for the soldiers who died in the war. Everybody else was doing it except him. We need to show respect to soldiers by remembering them. We read a book called Enemy Pie. It was about a new boy who moved into a neighbourhood and the boy who already lived there didn't like him because he laughed at him in baseball. The boy went into his treehouse and made a list of his enemies and put his name on it. The only name was Jeremy Ross. His dad said he would make an enemy pie but first he had to play with him for a whole day. The two boys had fun together. The boy learned that it's good to be kind to others. He was surprised that he liked him. The lesson is to be kind to others and not bully people. Take the time to get to know people. This afternoon we are going to do science and art. We are learning about food chains. Grade 3 is pretty good for all the students. I like learning about food chains and other things.
